But the end is the most important part of every book because it's what stays with you and after that I just can't bring myself to rate it anything but "did not like it". I am honestly shocked after reading all those 5* reviews. Not because people liked the book, but because people somehow manage to get something "inspirational" and romantic out of it. . . Seriously? I don't want to judge people for their opinioI had a hard time rating this book one star, because up until the end I really liked it.

Review: Case Histories by Kate Atkinson

Case Histories by Kate Atkinson 304pp, Doubleday, £16. 99 Kate Atkinson has put away the crockery, closed up the dishwasher and gone out of the kitchen door into the dark. Case Histories, her fourth novel since Behind the Scenes at the Museum, kicks off with a few unconnected vignettes: a three-year-old girl disappears one hot morning; a solicitor witnesses the violent death of his beloved daughter; a struggling mother loses her temper with her husband and reaches for the axe.
