Homework

About the author

Since coming to Harvard, I don’t recall even once hearing the word “homework”—which is a pretty strange thing considering the role it played for the first 12 years of my education. Spoiler alert: this doesn’t mean that we don’t have assignments and work to do (I wish!). However, the type of work that’s assigned in college is different from what I was used to in high school, so I’m here to break it down for you. Problem Sets Problem sets, or “psets”, are typically packets of questions that are assigned and due on a regular basis. Most of my pset classes have been math and science courses, although they don’t necessarily have to be.

Writing Equivalent Expressions

In this lesson, you'll learn what an algebraic expression is and what makes two algebraic expressions equivalent. You'll also see some examples of equivalent expressions. An algebraic expression is a string of numbers, variables, mathematical operations, and possibly exponents. For example, 4x + 3 is a basic algebraic expression. Or, we could get a little more complex with 3x(2x^2 + 2x - 5) + 6y. Notice that both of these examples contain the previously listed elements of an algebraic expression: numbers, variables, and mathematical operations, and the second expression contains the optional exponent.

Percent and Proportions

Percent and Proportions Unit 10 > Lesson 1 of 9 In previous lessons, you were shown how to convert a decimal to apercent and a percent to a decimal. Thus, if you were asked to Find 15% of 120, you would multiply. 15 by 120, to get an answer of 18. But what would you do if you given this problem: 8 is what percent of 20? In this problem, the percent is the unknown quantity! We need to figure out how to find this unknown quantity. Every statement of percent can be expressed verbally as: "One number is some percent of another number. " Percent statements will always involve three numbers.
